Celebrating Two Years of Parkinson’s Fitness Classes at Basingstoke Aquadrome
At Basingstoke Aquadrome, a fitness session for people living with Parkinson's recently celebrated its second anniversary! Launched in 2022, these sessions have offered more than just a workout - they've become a viral part of the social and physical wellbeing of many attendees.
With two classes a week, the sessions are led by experienced fitness instructors Aaron Boyd and Craig Stock, who are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
The idea for the classes came from Aaron, who saw the need for a fitness programme like this. Aaron said:
“I’ve been delighted at the success of these classes at the Aquadrome. They’re fully booked every week, which shows the demand and the need for something like this.
“The sessions act as a fitness class, but also as a chance to socialise, which is why we got together on the two-year anniversary of the launch to sit down, have a cup of tea together and a chat."
What the Participants Are Saying
For Pete, one of the regular attendees, the class provides more than just physical benefits:
“The class is a stress-free way of getting the exercise that is essential to delaying the impact of Parkinson’s for as long as possible. The team are very supportive, and just an hour or two each week makes you feel fitter and better in yourself.”
Keith, another regular, highlights the importance of the session's social element:
“It’s a relaxed group atmosphere, and because everyone in class has Parkinson’s, you can understand and help one another.
“The trainers are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and encourage each person in group to do their best. This exercise class helps with keeping active, which is so important to those with Parkinson’s, but the socialisation after class is each session is just as important!”
